Chapter Seventeen
Sterling
Watching Lottie like that, alone, defenseless and completely naked, but unable to do anything about it makes my blood boil. It takes all my effort not to jump out of the place where the three of us are hiding. All the muscles in my body are tense, ready to react. The wolf inside of me is rattling the cage, demanding to be released so it can show these hunters what itâs like to take on someone their own size. But I keep myself and my wolf under control. I have to. There is no other way to do this.
Weâve been following her since the afternoon. Morgan easily caught her scent. We wondered if she would remain in her human form, but the hunger was obviously too great. Unfortunately, she chose the worst place to shift. Itâs the human hunting ground, and taking into account the season, it was just a matter of time before they found her.
Iâm still wondering if we did the right thing by letting her go. I blame myself, as always. Itâs hard not to, especially when you know that your word is the one everyone abides by. Everyone, but her. Itâs the part about her thatâs driving me mad, when she stares me dead in the face and shows me, she isnât afraid of me. But that is also what is so mesmerizing about her. The bravery. The utter disregard for fear.
We were about to come out of our hiding place and warn her to go somewhere else, but something was preventing me. She wouldnât see our advice as helpful. On the contrary, she would see it as a threat. The fact that we followed her would take on a whole new meaning, one that wasnât meant by us.
So, we waited. We gave her more time, more freedom. And now itâs too late to do anything about it.
âAre we really just gonna stand by and watch this?â Axel hisses through clenched teeth.
I see his fists curling up into a ball. I know his wolf is enraged, trying to break the chains that are keeping him inside Morganâs body. I understand his frustration. He wants to run out there and play the knight in shining armor, as we did before. We all want to do this. She is ours to keep, ours to protect, ours to care for. But we canât. Weâre outnumbered, and not only that, but they also have rifles. Theyâd take us out before we even reached them.
Humans rarely play fair. Thatâs why you always have to be on your toes with them. Too many of us have died because they miscalculated the situation. We have the upper hand when it comes to face to face combat, but with their weapons, it is almost impossible to reach them in time and unharmed by a bullet.
âWhat if they hurt her?â Morgan whispers, while all our eyes are fixated on the scene taking place before us.
âThey wonât.â Thatâs all I say.
Honestly, Iâm not all that certain they wonât hurt her.
